The Initiated Through Birth course is designed as a 4-week, 2-module, 2 live session program. You have 4 weeks in which to continue accessing the material.

What does the course cover?

This program provides an in-depth inquiry into birth as a process of initiation, and includes storytelling and visualization; birth art; pain-coping practices; evidence-based understandings of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum; and inspiration for ritual and ceremony in the childbearing year. Some topics include:

Birth Justice

Rites of Passage

Mindfulness/Pain Coping Practices for Labor

Tasks of Pregnancy

Cesarean in Awareness

Preparing for Postpartum

Is there homework?

Yes, there is homework. Each module will include reading, journal prompts, and audio and video resources. Participants will benefit most from this course when they practice new skills regularly, so that by the end, they will feel confident in giving birth..

What is the format of the course?

The modules will be released on the course start-date (July 22). Each module includes main teaching videos, resources, and journal prompts, as well a live video call relating to the content of that module and for folks to ask questions, and practice these live sessions will be recorded. There is also an online community forum, which will be especially beneficial for those who cannot attend the live sessions.

Can I work at my own pace?

Our intention is that participants will move through the course approximately one module per week, working through the material in the order in which it is presented, as each module's material is foundational to the next. However, you will have access to all course material, and are free to move ahead as desired or take a slower pace as the material is available for 4 weeks.

Are there additional costs that I might incur during the course?

There is an optional reading list for the course, some participants find many of the books used or at the library. Pens, pencils, journals, and ice are easy to obtain if not already around the house. Chalk pastels are needed for birth art, however, if available, can substitute for crayons, markers, colored pencils, watercolors, etc. Chalk pastels can be ordered here.
